WINAMBA project
The Winamba Project supports Central American Communities to improve food security, sanitation and quality of life through appropriate technology and Agro-Ecological farming practice. We work directly with these communities, and the local non-profit groups which support them, to aid in sustainable development utilizing local resources and knowledge.
Food Production:
We employ a full time, Miskito, Agro-Ecologist who works with 300 women in 14 villages to improve the long-term efficacy of food production systems. The Agro-Ecologist conducts sustainable food production seminars, facilitates meetings between villages, brings in new food varietals and helps individual women solve the issues they face with their own particular food production site.
We estimate that these three hundred gardens have created food security for 1500 women, men and children.
Home Building:
In 2018 and early 2019 we have built four homes in three villages to be lived in communally by those widowed and orphaned by the violence associated with land grabs. These homes have been built using local, sustainably harvested materials. All work has been done with local labor and traditional building techniques, providing good employment for young people living in the villages.
Sustainable Development:
We have installed a comprehensive solar energy system in one of the communities we work with, to provide light and charging ports for all community members. In this same community we have installed a rain water catchment system, which provides clean drinking water for the village.
We are currently exploring the most effective way to expand into more villages with solar power. We are also researching the best ways to improve access to clean drinking water and sanitation.
